Water Based Activities
Westport’s perfect position on the shores of Clew Bay means that there are literally hundreds of options for the water sports enthusiast. Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and RIB tours are all just minutes away from Westport.
The Great Western Lakes of Galway and Mayo are recognised as the greatest wild brown trout fisheries in the world. Loughs Corrib, Mask, Carra and Conn are within easy drive of Westport. There are also a number of important river systems nearby that give great sport for the fisherman. What’s the best way to experience Clew Bay? Head on a boat trip around Clew Bay, its islands, coves, beaches to watch its wildlife including seals.
Kayaking and Sea Kayaking
Mayo has lots of options for kayaking. There are plenty of rivers and lakes to explore around the County, but by far the most popular option is sea kayaking in clew Bay and beyond. Beginners and experienced Kayakers welcome.
Stand up paddle boarding
The Adventure Islands offer stand-up paddle boarding at various Clew Bay locations including Collanmore Island and Rosmoney. They offer classes for beginners and for more experienced SUP enthusiasts.
Sea Trampoline
A trampoline with a difference, located on Collenmore Island, this promises to be fun filled and laugh out loud experience!
Fishing and Angling
Coarse Angling – Eleven coarse fishing lakes in the area hold bream, roach, and perch. Sea Angling- Boats can be chartered for angling, cruising on Clew Bay. Game angling allows visitors to fish for salmon and trout.
Surfing and Kite Surfing
Surfing locations in Mayo include Belmullet, Achill Island and the beaches in the Westport/Louisburgh area. The Adventure Islands offer surfing lessons to suit your skill level, from beginners to advanced.
Sailing
The Adventure Islands offers two types of sailing course – keelboat sailing and dinghy sailing. Keelboats give a more stable platform to learn to sail, but they are still ideal for racing and taking trips in.
Boat Trips and Rib Tours
Clew Bay has, according to tradition, has 365 islands, one for every day of the year. Take a boat trip to experience the spectacular views and see the seals in the bay.
Snorkelling
Snorkelling is a perfect way to discover the underwater world of Clew Bay, without the training needed to scuba dive. It’s great fun, easy to learn and an excellent way to build confidence in the water.
