SUMMARY:Mayo Titanic Cultural Week
DESCRIPTION:In April 1912 fourteen men and women from Addergoole\, in North Mayo\, set sail from Queenstown\, Cork for a new life in America. Within days\, eleven had died in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Their ship\, ‘Titanic’\, sank on her maiden voyage. A series of events are planned for the centenary of the ill-fated voyage. \nThe week begins with a re-enactment of the journey by pony trap and sidecar from Lahardane to Castlebar station on Sunday 8 April. \nA traditional live American Wake will take place in Lahardane community centre during the week\, performed by local children and adults. \nThe magnificent Mayo Titanic Ball for 300 people is on the night of Friday 13 April\, followed by the annual bell ringing ceremony on Sunday 15 April at 2.20am\, the time RMS Titanic sank\, when relatives of the Addergoole Fourteen toll rural the church bell. \nThe week closes with the official opening of the Mayo Titanic Memorial Park\, burial of the Mayo Titanic Time Capsule\, and an unveiling of two stained glass windows in St Patrick’s Church\, Lahardane. \nFor more information visit http://www.mayo-titanic.com/ \n
